Summary

The Manager, Development Sustainability, is responsible for ensuring alignment of our corporate environmental and sustainability goals through all stages of our properties under development. Reporting to the Director, Development, this role entails working collaboratively with our corporate ESG group, Development Project Managers and external project teams to integrate sustainability factors directly into the design and construction of projects. 

Responsibilities

  • Formalize strategy and business process for designing and constructing sustainable developments.
  • Conduct design requirement reviews to identify gaps and opportunity areas in line with our Sustainability Development Policy and Strategic Plan. 
  • Conduct market research and brand alignment with the RioCan Living team.
  • Create baseline energy models for projects in the Site Plan Application stage, to identify performance indicators such as indoor air quality, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. 
  • Provide consultant guidance to the project team (including Architectural, Interior Design, Mechanical & Electrical, Energy Consultants, and Construction Managers). 
  • Create a framework to manage and identify cost benefits for sustainability measures in our projects.
  • Define a systematic working relationship with our ESG group and set up regular touchpoints.
  • Oversee green certification criteria and reporting (such as GRESB).
  • Ensure alignment with financial obligations (Green Bonds, CMHC, etc).
  • Consider how social, resource, climate and technological trends will define sustainable properties in the future.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Facilitate ongoing learning sessions with Development to educate the group on our Sustainability approach.
  • Bachelor degree in Business, Engineering or Environmental Science
  • Related graduate degree or any relevant sustainability certification such as LEED AP, greenhouse gas inventory quantifier and/or certified energy manager is an asset
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating and interpreting energy models
  • Familiarity with GRESB key performance indicators
  • Demonstrated performance in a sustainability management role with a minimum of 5 years’ experience 
  • Sound oral and written communication skills
  • Sound project management skills
  • Interpersonal skills, contributing to teams
